(Multiple shipments of similar items AT NO EXTRA CHARGE) You are bidding on an ORIGINAL ENGRAVING from J.J. Scheucher's 'Physica Sacra'. Published Augsberg [1731 - 35]. The Physica Sacra, concurrently published in Latin & German, is Scheuchzer's famous scientific commentary on the Bible with overall 762 plates on cosmography, paleontology, zoology, botany, anatomy. The Kupfer-Bibel showcases the state of lexicography and of philological methods in the early eighteenth century and provides a select bibliography of recent publications on these subjects. Scheuchzer, 1672-1733, Swiss scholar, physician, chair of physics, professor in mathematics, credited for being one of the fathers of paleontology, died two years prior to the publication of the final volume, a publication process of overall eleven years. The sketches are the work of the artist Johann Melchior Füssli, numerous engravers of the time took part. Please Note That These Prints Were Issued Uncolored. CONDITION: Very Good. Background Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (August 2, 1672 – June 23, 1733) The son of the senior town physician (Archiater) of Zürich, he received his education in that place, and, in 1692, went to the University of Altdorf near Nuremberg, being intended for the medical profession. Early in 1694 he took his degree of doctor in medicine at the University of Utrecht, and then returned to Altdorf, Germany to complete his mathematical studies. He went back to Zürich in 1696 and was made junior town physician (Poliater) with the promise of the professorship of mathematics which he duly obtained in 1710. He was promoted to the chair of physics, with the office of senior town physician, in January 1733, only a few months before his death on June 23. Scheuchzer was a Swiss mathematics and physics professor who believed that the bible and particularly the Old Testament was a factual account of the history of the world. As a scientist he set out to prove the reality of biblical events in the context of physics, natural history, medicine and paleontology. In other words he was attempting to prove the very existence of God through the application of science. The Swiss were reluctant to publish his lavishly illustrated work and he had to go to Germany to find a publisher. The 'Physica Sacra' or 'Kupfer-Bibel' is justly famous for its highly ornate illustations of natural history, architecture and religous scenes even if the concepts and arguments put forward by Scheuchzer were considered archaic and tenuous .
