This was the very first BMX freestyle bike with a bash guard! Borrowing from the trial bikes of the era, Haro took the idea to incorporate a chainring guard or bash guard into their bmx freestyle bikes to create a new street bike for the emerging branch of freestyle called street riding. This is very common nowadays, with well known events like the X Games and formerly the Gravity Games (back in the day it was 2-Hip: King of Vert and 2-Hip: Meet the Street), but this was the beginning of the sport. The bashguard innovation quickly copied by GT and other brands, allowed you to grind without destroying your chainring, spider, or chain wheel. Having bent them on my previous bike, a 1987 GT Pro Freestyle Tour, I can say that this was an adaptation that worked, and was much appreciated (no one likes to quit riding for the day because they tweaked a part and have to replace it). When I started riding flatland, ramp, and street, I went through 3 frames before I thankfully got this Haro frame and fork set. I cracked or bent every frame previously, but the Haro never gave me a single problem, and still is ready to ride!
Almost all of the freestylers I knew custom built their bikes to their own preferences, so everyone's bikes were a reflection of the rider, their personality, and their style of riding. You may want to replace the pedals and grips as they have wear, but I actually liked them this way. The forks have their original forkstanders, but not the screw-in pegs, this is for a very simple reason. At the time, everyone agreed (even reviewers) that their placement was a bit awkward, and it was better to just add a regular pair of pegs to the front wheel rather than use the provided screw-in ones. Every time I take this bike out, I get compliments from other riders (even from pros!). It's a beautiful bike, and is to this day, totally dialed in. It is extremely light, but very tough, and took everything I could throw at it. Here's what this awesome custom bike consists of, all circa late 1980s: 1989 Haro Street Master chrome frame and fork (with integrated fork standers) Boss chrome BMX handlebars (with black bar ends) ACS black/silver Tangent locking levers Ame black mountain bike grips Odyssey Gyro blue detangler with black and gray brake cables DK stem made in aircraft aluminum with a hollow bolt Tioga Bear Trap headset ACS black Boa brakes (front and rear) ACS RL Edge 48 rims with sealed Joytech hubs (Suntour Japanese freewheel) Kenda black tires (lots of tread, with Mr. Tuffy tire liners) GT black Porcupine axle pegs (front and rear) Tioga Task Force cranks Tioga Bottom Bracket Shimano white PD-MX20 pedals Mongoose chrome spider GT blue seat by Viscount Pete's Products blue 44T chainring Tange blue seatpost clamp chrome lay back seatpost This bike was made back in the day of legendary Haro riders like Matt Hoffman (later Mat Hoffman), Ron Wilkerson (creator of the 2-Hip: King of Vert and Meet the Street contests), Dennis McCoy (DMC) and Brian Blyther. With the resurgence of Old School flatland riding, and the popularity of street riding, I figured this bike deserves to be owned by someone who will properly enjoy it, and perfect their tricks with a bike that won't let them down.
