Obtained from an old Scottish family which emigrated to Canada, tradition holds that this sword was used at the famous Battle of Culloden Moor in 1746, the last land battle fought on British soil, which brought an end to the Jacobite rebellion and the hopes of Bonnie Prince Charlie to gain the crown. While there is no way to prove this, the hilt is the exact type carried by two regiments which did fight at the battle, the Royal Horse Guards and the 12th Dragoons. Hilt is made of flat bars and panels in the Glasgow style. One bar has a chip missing (see photo). The 33" single edged blade features two fullers running nearly the entire length. On one side is stamped in the fuller FARARA. Blade is worn overall and has numerous shallow edge nicks. Replaced leather covered grip with iron wire wrap. Metal with dark patina and moderate pitting overall. Mounts on included oak wall plaque with a brass label reading, From the Field of Battle Culloden Moor 16 April, 1746" in two lines. A fabulous relic from what is probably the most famous battle ever fought in Scotland. Sure to please the most demanding Scottish history buff! Please contact seller for more information about this sword or the Battle of Culloden.
