SCOTTISH PRINT SIR WALTER SCOTT PORTRAIT SCOTLAND ’s a great new print of a turn-of-the-century photochrom portrait of famed Scottish poet and novelist, Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). The exact year of the original portrait and the artist are not known. The portrait makes Scott a handsome man, perhaps in his forties, with deep penetrating eyes. A lawyer by education he was sometimes a lawman but he is best known as a writer of Scottish novels and poetry that has gone in and out of fashion. The text at the bottom reads: “Sir Walter Scott. Scottish Novelist & Poet, 1771-1832.” The photochrom process, on which this print is based, was developed in Switzerland and gained huge popularity in the 1890s and early 1900s. The process was a combination of photography and lithography that resulted in stunning images that have the clarity of photographs and the intensity of hand painted images. During the process a black-and-white photo was hand colored. Then using a series of colored stone plates—many times more than 14 stones—a color print could be reproduced. Now, more than a hundred years later we are still left with intense and unique images. This new print is on a very high-quality 100# glossy text paper. The actual image measures 10.5” (w) X 16.5” (h). The paper size is 11” (w) x 17” (h). Tfore, it has a small border to allow for framing. read more
