RARE 1885 SCOTTISH STERLING SILVER COFFEE POT IN THE ISLAMIC TASTE; VINE FRAMED PANELS DEPICTING HUNTERS, DANCE AND MYTHICAL FIGURES; ELABORATE SCROLLING FOLIATE, PAIRS OF FISH AND BAT DECORATION; PAVILION FINIAL; J.REID, GLASGOW, 1885; NEVER MONOGRAMMED; 29 OUNCES
This is a beautifully designed, extensively ornamented late 19th century Scottish sterling silver coffee pot. In the highly sought Islamic or Persian taste. From the Glasgow firm of J. Reid. Date marked 1885. We know little more about Reid. Other than he crafted tea serivces, mugs and trays during the 1870s-80s. Nineteenth century Glasgow sterling is quite rare. Compared to English silver. The later produced in far greater quantity. Perhaps in ratio terms, one hundred to one. Glasgow sterling in Islamic form, is yet another one hundred times more rare. This stunning coffee pot crafted in tall "barrel" form. Tapering to base. Twelve raised, wavy vine framed panels. Each depicting a richly detailed figural scene. Each completely distinct from the others. Long robbed hunter, taking aim with bow and arrow. Second hunter, short rifle in hand, leading a boar headed hunt dog. A figure with wolf's head hat, and raised dagger. Another figure, dog at his feet raises two long swords. A tall hatted woman, with long featd "chicken" body. And, my favorite, a tall winged, scaly creature with upside down head. This fellow is behind the handle. Oval framed "balconies" overhead. Each with different figure watching the panels below. Others with single birds within. Series of elaborate borders. Intricate scrolling foliates designs. Others with pairs of fish amidst florals. Streaming waves. Others with bead and vine framed panels, bats or perhaps butterflies enclosed. Bead and scrolling vine panelled upper rim. Recessed, circular cover. Well fit. Topped with beautifully carved pavilion form finial. Gadrooned trim, panelled dome with globe and cone tip...gorgeous. Profusely decorated spout and handle. Continuation of the Islamic inspired scrolling foliate designs throughout. Never monogrammed. This extremely rare, 1885 date marked Islamic form Scottish sterling silver coffee pot is 9 1/2 inches tall and 7 1/2 handle to spout. Exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling construction, weighs 29 ounces. It is excellent condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina. Interior free of discoloration. Handle perfectly secure, with original heat stops. The vine framed hunting, dance and mythical figural panels and extensive fish, bat and scrolling foliate decoration retains its original, crisp vibrant hand chased detail. Almost no rubbing whatever to high points. Several small, shallow compressions near base, old dent restoration. Coffee pot perfectly steady on the table. Extremely crisp, well struck hallmarks to underside, as shown. Partial hallmarks under pavilion form finial. Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed.
