A stunningly superb superior Scottish large Victorian Brass Scottish Thistles Plaid Brooch, heirloom quality. It is in superb condition, with a beautiful Scottish Thistle design. Due to its rarity and value it will come Parcel Force signed for. Ideal for Clansmen, The Groom etc. Approx. Size : Diameter 3.25 inches. History of the Scottish Thistle as an emblem The prickly purple thistle was adopted as the Emblem of Scotland during the reign of Alexander III (1249 -1286). Legend has it that an Viking army of King Haakon of Norway, intent on conquering the Scots landed at the Coast of Largs at night to surprise the sleeping Scottish army. In order to move more stealthily under the cover of darkness the Norsemen removed their footwear. As they drew near to the Scots it wasn't the only thing hiding under the cover of darkness. For one of Haakon's men unfortunately stood on one of these spiny little defenders and shrieked out in pain, alerting the Scots of the advancing Norsemen. This occurred at the Battle of Largs in 1263, which marked the beginning of the departure of King Haakon IV (Haakon the Elder) of Norway who, having control of the Northern Isles and Hebrides, had harried the coast of the Kingdom of Scotland for some years.
