Scovill lenses can be difficult to date because so many were French imports, and the serial numbers were not always consistent. The Peerless line of lenses was announced in 1872, and the known serial numbers vary from a low of 100 to a high of 1000 or so over the 20 year Peerless lifespan. This Peerless with Serial Number 421 would then be ca. 1880 +/-, and probably a Rapid Rectilinear. This example is slotted for Waterhouse stops, with the slot concealed below the outer barrel. In use, the inner barrel is moved forward to expose the slot, and the one original stop in place (the equivalent of f8), with the tab bent flat to allow moment of the barrel. The fabrication details are typical to those used by Gasc & Charconnet, a supplier to Scovill at the time. The focal length of this lens is about 6”. The barrel has a 2” diameter, the hood is 2 3/8” in diameter, and the overall length is 4 1/8”. The glass is clear and unscratched with no visible separation or fungus, the brass is still bright (except for the flange), with few signs of age, and the focus moves smoothly from limit to limit. The hood has a minor flat spot, and the flange may not be original but screws securely onto the barrel. The overall condition of this 6” +/- Scovill Peerless Lens is E, and there is no reserve.Bidding, Shipping and Return Policy:1.
