This is a very old whale tooth carved by an Eskimo. The design is a bas relief carving of an Eskimo Hunter holding a spear. Above the hunter is a carving of a bear head. The back side has a bas relief carving of an Eskimo Woman. Above her is a carved walrus head. My photos do not do this piece justice. The weight of this sperm whale tooth is 7.5 oz, almost 1/2 pound. The height is 5 inches, the diameter is 5 inches. T is a crack on the front by the hunter's leg, as shown in photo 5, it does not appear that it will travel. The artist is Arnold Kayutak. He moved back to his home town of Point Barrow, Alaska. In 1989 it is thougt that he walked out to an ice floe to die as his ancesters did. T was a search by the community. Arnold was never found. Northwest Arts and Crafts was owned by my Father, Heinz Lange. I grew up around Arnold and many other native carvers. This is a great example of genuine Alaskan Native Carving. NOTE TO EBAY: THIS IS A SPERM WHALE TOOTH CARVED BY AN ESKIMO. THIS IS CONSIDERED AN AUTHENTIC ALASKAN HANDICRAFT. I have been in the ivory/scrimshaw business for about 50 years and I sell only genuine ivory worked by genuine artists!! HAPPY BIDDING!!
