Up for auction is a stone depiction of a standing Jizo Bosatsu, the hands forming the gassho adoration mudra, clearly dated to the third year of the Kyowa Era (1803), late-Edo Period.
A sizable Jizo hand-sculpted from a relatively lightweight sedimentary stone composed of volcanic ash, with traces of polychrome. Minor loss and distinct lichen accumulation. The tongue-like element projecting from the bottom surface of this piece corresponds to the groove in the top surface of the lotus-form dais upon which it was originally placed. In the absence of the original dais, this Jizo requires some form of assistance to remain perfectly upright. The most obvious solution is to display the piece outdoors w it can be inserted into the soil, tby obviating the need for extraneous support. The wooden dais shown in the photographs is included in this auction. Dimensions: Overall height, including wooden dais: 63.9 cm (25.2 in) Height of stone visible above the wooden dais: 57.5 cm (22.6 in) Width of base: 18.3 cm (7.2 in) Depth of base: 14.8 cm (5.8 in) Packaged weight: 21 kg ( 46.2 lb) Shipping information: Surface mail shipping and insurance for this piece will be US$100 for Europe, North America, and Oceania. SAL wait-list airmail shipping and insurance will be US$187 for Europe, North America, and Oceania. EMS airmail shipping and insurance will be US$279 for Europe and US$240 for North America and Oceania. Thank you for viewing this listing.
