Dorothy (1925-1991) andWalter Auman (1926-1991) were one of the mainstays of NC pottery in the darktimes of Seagrove (1970's) when pottery buying and utilitarianware were becoming passe. Dot was the daughter of Charles C Cole (CC Cole), a famous NC art pottery maker in early and mid-20th century. Walt also came from a family of potters, including cousins that operated the Auman pottery operation in the 1920's and 30's. The Auman's pottery museum of historical NC pottery in Seagrove became the basis for the Charlotte Mint Museum's collection (sold to the museum in 1980). During the operation they employed folk potter Bob Armfield (who later operated his own shop, Oakland Pottery), and the Kings (also opened their own shop in Seagrove), amongst others. Dot's most famous folk form would likely be her frog-in-the-mug and a limited amount of face jugs she produced. T's also a few rare figurals (mostly still with the family). While they were alive (they died in 1991 tragically of an accident with a logging truck), they made special punch bowl sets for NC governors elect. Though their bread and butter was the traditional utiliarianware finished with variety of glazes, mostly plates, cups, bowls, and mugs. Centerpieces were also made to match these sets. This large serving bowl would be in this centerpiece category of the Aumans. A large read more
