MONTAGU GEORGE KNIGHT - JANE AUSTEN ASSOCIATIONS Bookplate 1: Fine copper-engraved seal armorial of Montagu George Knight of Chawton , and signed in the design C.W.S. R.E. 1900 . Arms of Knight quartering Austen and Leigh, impaling Hardy, with three extra shields of Knight. Bookplate 2: Fine copper-engraved crest of Montagu George Knight of Chawton , and signed in the design C.W.S. R.E. 1901 . The Knights and Leighs were close family to the Austens. Montagu George Knight was born in Chawton, Hampshire, the son of Edward Knight (b.c.1795 in Godmerston, Kent, m.1840 Adela Portal b.c.1818 in Freefolk, Hampshire, d.1870) ). The 1881 census describes Montagu as "Magistrate, BA Oxford" and records also his brother Philip, "Honorary Major Retired", his brother-in-law, five nephews/nieces, and thirteen servants. He m.1870 Florence (d.1935) dau of Charles Hardy. The engraver was Charles William Sherborn, regarded now as the most accomplished Victorian engraver of bookplates.
