Secondary Use Playing Cards It’s the 18th and early 19th century and what do you do with an incomplete deck of playing cards, throw them away because one or more of the cards are missing from the deck? New paper and card stock is expensive, still being made by hand from old cotton cloth and rags. So instead of discarding the remaining cards you put them to a different use to maximize their paper value, and in so doing you’ve created what we now term Secondary Use Playing Cards. Many were used for note taking, some for index cards, some for receipts, others for calling cards, also for invitations, tickets, invoices, while still others are used for pay vouchers and some to even function as emergency money during a time of war. Encountered today French examples appear to be the most common, other European countries less so, British examples are scarce and American examples rarely seen.
