This auction is for a "Secret of the Gnomes" Collector Plate by Rien Poortvliet, dated 1986, titled "ORIGIN OF SANTA CLAUS." This plate is from the book of the same name published by Harry N Abrams- 1981 Unieboek, BV and is numbered 350 out of a limited 15,000. This comes to you in the original box, in perfect condition, has not been displayed, so it is brand new. The plate is 8 3/4 " with a gold edge and is Fairmont Porcelain. Also, signed Rien* on front and back. The back of the plate says: Origin of the belief in Santa Claus can be explained as follows: In the wintry cold and snowy skies, light refraction caused people from time to time to see Gnomes who had taken on giant proportion. When t is a certain degree of humidity in the air, it causes small objects to grow into gigantic shapes. It is a magical kind of mirage.
