FIRST CLASS ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN KARABAGH CHONDZORESK (Cloud-band Kazak) KARABAGH CARPET, Southern Caucasus Mountains, last third of the 19th century, and coming in very good overall condition for the collector. The exact size is: 4'-2" x 7'-8" (127 x 234 cm). The eye immediately picks up on the blue and green "Chondzoresk" medallions resting on a tomato red field filled with assorted filler motifs including a three human effigies, two mounted horse riders holding samovars, several large quadrapeds, smaller colorful birds, and an assortment of scattered geometric devices all of which are neatly framed by a large and colorful classic ivory "crab" border surround common to many antique south Caucasian weaving districts. All of the dye lots are 100% natural and derived from plant sources. Considering its age, the overall condition of this powerful antique Caucasian textile artifact is quite good with evenly low pile condition for the field and a bit higher pile for the border areas. Difficult at best to see with an untrained eye, under close inspection I witness small scattered places of repiling, presumably of worn spots. There are NO rips, holes, tears, moth damage, stains, odors, color run or fading. The top and bottom endings are original and complete and now sewn back secure to prevent any future loss of structure. The two-cord, red wool-wrapped, over-castings on both sides are all original and complete. The carpet came to me "as is' and it is a bit dusty from storage. A professional cleaning will enhance its beauty. Aesthetically speaking, this is as good of a "Cloud-Band Kazak" specimen as one can find on today's world markets. It makes an absolutely stunning statement as a decorative wall hanging. It is stong and strudy and floor worthy if used in a low traffic area with a good rug pad underneath. With its whimsical and charming zoomorphic additions that the weaver had the liberty to incorporate during its creation, this is certainly a very folksy and publishable quality example of its type that could be illustrated in any antique oriental rug book.
