This is a Fixed Price Listing with Make Offer Option for an Autographed Copy of "The Selected Writings of Dylan Thomas", a First edition 1946 printing and Flatsigned on the front flyleaf by the Welsh Poet;
Flatsigned is the term used when the signer handled the book unlike a signed inserted blank page or bookplate. This book was signed in Washington D.C. for Richard Hogue whose Bookplate is on the front pastedown. Mr Hogue attended a Reading of British Poets by Dylan Thomas at the Institute of of Contemorary Art in D.C. on March 8th and 9th 1950. Quoting "There was a very elitist group who met for readings…something called the Institute of Contemporary Art, which brought major figures like Eliot and Dylan Thomas to Washington, but I don’t think the events were publicized, and very few people knew about them; and I had been involved, in a way, with writers, and others, and I thought that it would be the time to do it" There is important Dylan Thomas Biographical information in this volume. His first reading was in New York on 23 February 1950 but little is known of the dates or contents of other readings. Mr Hogue provided a list of the reading in checkmarks on the contents page of this volume. In addition on a card he typed the readings and added comments about meeting Dylan Thomas the next day 9 March 1950 so it must have been a 2 day reading. Mr Hogue comments:"AFTER HEARING HIM READ I TOLD HIM I FELT THAT I HAD BEEN IN ON THE FIRST DAY OF CREATION--THERE WAS ABUNDANCE TAKING SHAPE." Very little is known about the Institute that sponsered Thomas and a Google search only lists similiar named Institutes in other cities and countries. I am including my copy of DYLAN THOMAS IN AMERICA by John Malcolm Brinnin published London 1957, when I went to Fairfax Va Library none of its 7 branches had a copy, It contains some interesting anacdotes written by the man who accompanied the Poet on his visits to US, In DC Dylan Thomas Stole the Shirts of the man giving him rooms gratis.
