Welcome to Peyote People, my name is Kevin and together with my wife Beatriz we run a small gallery in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico that works directly with the Huichol Indians that live in San Andres Cohamiata, Jalisco. Over the last 10years we have developed very close relationships with a number of Huichol families. Unlike most who buy their art in the city, I actually fly up into the Sierra to observe their ceremonies and rituals and take them supplies like the carvings that they use and new glass beads with irridescent colors that we import for our artists to work with. We believe that the artist is just as valuble as the art; every piece that we sell is marked with the artist name and has a stamp that states their tribal affiliation which ads to the 1991 Indian Arts and Crafts Act. Beaded skull measures 5" long, 5" tall and is 3.5" wide This is an absolutely unbelievable beaded skull, hand beaded and signed by the artist Santos Bautista. The skull itself is an exact resign copy of a full size human skull, complete with a movable jaw this piece is about as close as it gets to a real skull!! Santos is an exceptional artist who lives in San Andres Cohamiata the ancient Huichol ceremonial center located deep in the Sierra Madre mountains of Western Mexico. The attention to detail that Santos gives his art really set his work apart. We have been working with Santos for some time now and over the last 3years have been importing our own Czech glass beads in new irridescent and metalic colors that give Santos more color combinations to use in his art. This is a very busy time for the Huichol now that the new year is ; the Cambio de las Barras ceremony just took place this past weekend in San Andres w the civil authority gave way to the new Traditional Government. Many Huichol have made the long trek to the city to trade wares for the money that they needed to participate in this important festival. Please note that the winner will pay $15 for shipping from Mexico to your door by air courier. Paypal, Bidpay and Money Orders are all accepted; Personal checks take 14days to clear!!!!Please feel free to write us if you have any questions regarding any of the pieces in our collection or the Huichol that we work with. Peyote People has been recognized by the Huichol Traditional Government of San Andres Cohamiata for its work in the community and started a Fair Trade co-operative that promotes cultural authenticity by working with Huichol that actually live in the Sierra and are actively involved in the presvation of their cultures traditions.
