This is the one lira currency note issued by The Bank of Syria and Lebanon on September 1, 1939, the date world war II started in Europe, when Germany invaded Poland. The note is green on a multicolored background. The front shows the pillars of Baalbek left of center. It also has two signatures, as well as the date of issue and the serial number. The back of the note is red with the image of a city in the center. The note has two parallel lilac lines as over print both on the front and back. There is also over print of the word SYRIE in the top margin on the front. The note was issued by the Bank of Syria and Lebanon and was printed by BWC (Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company in England). The banknote has no watermark that we could find. This particular note has the solid serial number 077777, which we like very much especially that the number "7" is our lucky number. It is series U/CK. Please carefully review the scan as it is part and parcel of our description.Date: The banknote shows a date of 1 September 1939 (the date when world War II started in Europe).Printer: Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company in England. Size: Measures ~6 1/2" by ~3 3/8".Pick Number: P40c.Condition: This note is rare because of its solid serial number 77777 and its date of issue September 1, 1939, which is the day World War II started in Europe. I would grade the note as a fine to very fine with all its details being well preserved. This is an attractive note showing evidence of considerable handling and some soiling. It has several vertical but seemingly no horizontal fold. The note has extensive wrinkling but has minimal soiling and no major objectionable staining. The note retains some of its original crispiness and the paper is still stiff. It has no tears, no splits, and the edges show minimum wear. Corners are intact and fairly squared and show some wear but minimum rounding. The bottom left corner is not torn-off but rather folded on itself and could probably be straightened out. The note has no graffiti, no pinholes, and is in great original condition. It does have wear commensurate with its age and circulated status.
