SERBIAN AND YUGOSLAV MAUSER RIFLES by Branko Bogdanovic *** One of the most comprehensive books on Eastern European Mausers currently in print. A MUST for your Mauser or military firearms library! In the 1978 movie The Deer Hunter four of the main characters: Michael (played by Robert DeNiro), Stan, Nick, and Axel, are hunting in the mountains near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A magnificent buck suddenly appears and Michael kills it with one clean shot. The rifle he used was his favorite, a Mauser Model 70 Zastava made in Yugoslavia. This scene from the cult film about the Vietnam War and its effects on the main characters was fictional; however, the Zastava-made Mauser was real and its use around the world well documented. Serbian-built Mausers proved to be exceptionally high quality weapons and were used extensively by the Serbian Army from the 1890s well into the last half of the twentieth century. It was Serbian gunsmiths who developed the famous "ring of steel" that enclosed the cartridge head and helped make the the Model 1898 Mauser rifle a world standard in bolt-action, magazine rifles. Rifles based on the Mauser system made a substantial contribution to Serbia's campaigns in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), the first World War (1914-1918), and in Yugoslavia's successful resistance to German aggression and occupation from 1941 to 1945. These rifles are famous throughout the world, and their world-wide renown and quality make these arms worthy of research and publication.
