The first two, series 1963 and 1963A, are commonly found on auction sites and in coin shops, although there's some value in uncirculated sets with errors or extremely low serial numbers. The third run, series 1963B, was extraordinarily limited, making these notes difficult to find, especially the star notes. Only five mint districts produced series 1963B star notes, including New York, Richmond, Chicago, Kansas City, and San Francisco. The Kansas City district produced so few of these notes that they're nearly impossible to find. These notes are known as "Barr" notes because they were minted bearing the signature of Joseph Barr during his one-month term as interim secretary of the treasury after his predecessor, Henry H. Fowler, left office before his term expired. MORE ABOUT STAR NOTES Star notes are notes that were minted to replace ordinary notes that were too badly damaged during production to be placed into circulated. As a result, there are far fewer star notes out there than ordinary notes. It's because of this that stars have become so highly valued and so highly collectible. A star note is marked by the * at the beginning or end of it's serial number. The earliest star note produced, that we've seen anyway, was a one dollar note from all the way back in 1861, during the era of the civil war. Star notes have since been produced by the U.S. mint in 1867, 1891, 1892, 1901, 1907, 1914, 1917, 1918, 1922, 1923, 1928, 1929, 1934, 1935, 1950, 1953, 1957, 1963, 1969, 1974, and 1976 as well as in more recent years. There are also several types, including gold certificates, silver certificates, green seal "payable in gold" notes, district notes, United States Notes, and Federal Reserve Notes. Low serial numbers and errors add value! The lower the serial number on a note, the higher its value. Star notes that have serial numbers beginning with four or more zeroes are almost never seen, and a serial beginning with three zeroes is also rare. An error note is far rarer than one with a low serial number. Every so often the mint has made mistakes, such as misaligning the seal stamp and serial numbers on some notes. In some cases these "error" notes are so rare that only a handful exist, and in other cases there are a number of notes with the same error floating around, but either way error notes are rarer than ordinary star notes and are more highly sought after, and thus have added value.
