Up for Auction is a 1943 Series E War bond issued from The Bowery Savings Bank of NY. It is in excellent preserved condition. Not signed. Only one crease down the middle. Not torn. The Secretary of the treasury at the time was Henry Morgenthau Jr. He was the father of recently retired Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. The issue date was October 6, 1943. The same day that The Battle of Vella Lavella began . The NY Yankees were playing the St. Louis Cardinals in game 2 the World Series in NY. Its an awesome piece of History and a great conversation piece to have in your home or office. I will be auctioning a $1000 Series E War Bond in the near future. The Battle of Vella Lavella, October 6, 1943 On the morningof October 6, 1943, a force of 9 destroyers and assorted landing craft under the command of Rear Admiral Matsuji Ijuin set sail from Rabaul headed for Vella Lavella to evacuate that island’s approximately 600-man garrison. In an early example of “leapfrogging”, American forces had bypassed Kolombangara and landed with little opposition at Vella Lavella on 15 August. On the Afternoon of October 6 th , search planes sighted the Japanese force and six American destroyers in the area sailed toward the evacuation point at Marquana Bay.
