Lovely Estate Sterling Rare Set of 12 Durgin "Watteau" Shell Back Fluted Citrus Spoons Gold Wash Early Retailer Mark: S.C.L. Co. I adore these spoons. I love the beauty of the shell back, the fine gold wash, the fluted bowl, and the rich warm patina. T's something alluring about old estate sterling and this set is no exception. The feel of quality in the hand is splendid. Gets me cheerful. Citrus spoons! They're just so finely crafted, perfectly honed, reflective of a past era w every single utensil had a separate function based on form and shape. Gold wash bowl to avoid pitting and ill-taste. The shell form exquisitely shaped to hold the fresh juice of morning ruby grapefruit! These are great. Think they are truly wonderful. These spoons came from a wonderful estate auction in the Midwest. Early Durgin, in the Watteau pattern, appropriately marked with raised scrolled "D, I have never had a complete set of 12 Citrus Spoons, let alone from a Fine Sterling maker as Durgin. I think the full set of 12, coupled with both the old early D mark and the retailer's mark makes these a bit rarer than one would assume. The Watteau pattern is elegant. Highly ornate. The scrolling of silver, the tiny bud floral motif and the graceful curves of the shell bowl are stunning in form and style. Measures: 5 5/8"L Total set weight: 8.2oz FREE FROM MONOGRAM The condition is fantastic. T is one spoon which shows some loss of gold wash, but all retaine a crisp hone to the bowl. The pattern is excellent and detailing is fine. I know these were well-cared for by the original family and passed down the generations as treasured family-heirloom pieces. I do not mind the unpolished patina and am selling this set in the exact condition as purchased. I believe these Durgin Shell back, Gold wash Citrus Spoons would make a superb addition to any set or collection of fine early pattern Sterling of the era.
