Set of 12 Wedgwood United States Naval Academy commemorative 10 1/8" china plates in mulberry on cream (creamware). Early in the 1930s the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and an Annapolis jewelry store (Tilghmans) began selling a set of dinner plates with matching cups and saucers designed and made by Wedgwood. The Alumni Association sold the last of its stock sometime in the 1960s and now, the Academy china has become a hot, highly collectible item. These plates (plus twelve 6 plates and twelve cups and saucers) were purchased from the estate of a former Naval Academy instructor who began collecting the plates in the 1930s. The U.S. Naval Academy is located on the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis, Maryland, and each plate has a different historic view of the best-known landmarks of this grand institution. The twelve scenes include Old Fort Severn 1851, Airplane View From East, Birds Eye View Of The Naval Academy 1858, Sailboat Drill, Old Main Gate 1869-1932, Mahan Hall, Naval Academy Hop 1869, The Chapel, Old Midshipmen Quarters 1868-1905, Dress Parade, Dahlgren Hall, and Postgraduate School. Each view is encircled by an array of naval symbols-the Academy crest, cannons, ships wheels and square-riggers under full spread of canvas. Images of Sailboat Drill, The Chapel, Dress Parade and Naval Academy Hop 1869 are seen here. Please email for images of the eight other plates. Each plate is backstamped in mulberry-colored print underglaze with the title of the view (see above listing), Wedgwood Etruria England, U.S. Naval Academy and the distributors mark Jones McDuffee & Stratton Co., Boston, and is impressed with the Wedgwood date mark. Some of the impressed marks are difficult to read but many were made in 1937. Therefore, you must assume these plates are from various editions. THIS PRICE IS FOR ALL TWELVE 10 1/8 PLATES ALTHOUGH ONLY FOUR PHOTOS APPEAR HERE. PLEASE EMAIL TO RECEIVE IMAGES OF THE EIGHT OTHER PLATES. SEE SELLERS OTHER LISTINGS FOR MORE PIECES OF NAVAL ACADEMY CHINA. A set of 12 smaller bread & butter 6" plates (with one badly chipped) and 12 footed cups with ear handles (2 high) and saucers (5 1/4") in the same pattern are now being offered in two separate listings. The cup and saucer is being sold as one item, but each item may be purchased individually.
