BEADED INDIAN JEWELRY: PlainsIndian beadwork is most famous, with its intricate peyote jewelry and bone hairpipe chokers, but t are beadwork traditions throughout North America, from the wampum jewelry of the eastern Indians to the shell and turquoise heishi necklaces of the southwestern Indians, from the floral beadwork of the northern Indians to the dentalium strands of the west coast Indians, and everything in between. Beads were a common trade item since ancient times, so it wasn't surprising to see quahog wampum from the east coast in Great Lakes beadwork or abalone shells from the west coast in Cherokee jewelry, even before the Europeans arrived and forced everyone onto reservations near each other. Within our Store and Auctions you will find some fine examples of different beaded Native American jewelry styles. BUY INDIAN! Cheap imported knockoffs hurt hardworking and talented Native American craftspeople as well as legitimate eBay sellers. If authenticity is important to you, buy only from reputable eBay sellers who offer genuine Native American made merchandise. DEAD/OLD PAWN JEWELRY: For many Native Americans, pawn refers to the practice of converting artwork and possessions into income for life's necessities. These items often serve as the family "reserve" or "emergency" fund. In times of need, jewelry and other items of value can be easily used as security with an authorized trader (pawned) for cash to meet the current crisis. In other cases, when the elders of the family die, the deceased's items might be pawned, and the money divided up within the family. Pawn is also used by many Native Americans in the same way that a safety deposit box would be used. The jewelry is "pawned" for safe keeping in between religious ceremonies or other special occasions. The lender keeps it for the agreed amount of time, and if the loan or pawn fees are not paid off by the agreed date, the pawn shop or trader is authorized to sell the jewelry. If jewelry is not redeemed by its owner by the expiration date, the piece is referred to as Dead Pawn. Because much of the pawned merchandise is of real day-to-day value in the owner's life, the percentage of pawn that goes unredeemed is quite small, making items of dead pawn among the most highly valued and sought after Native American artifacts to be found on the market today. In the few cases w the pawn is not retrieved, it becomes dead pawn or old pawn and the pawn broker has a legal right to sell the merchandise to recoup the money that was paid to the Native American artist. Our pawn shop contains new and used Authentic Native American Made items, sometimes with materials, date and origin unknown. Many of our items are Dead Pawn or Old Pawn.
