I have a set of two English Staffordshire spaniels, wildly popular during the Victorian era, during the middle and later 19th century, and later enjoying a resurgence during the 1930's. The term Staffordshire refers to the location in England, and not a specific manufacturer. The dogs were made by many different companies, and each one is unique as they were all hand-painted. The Staffordshire dogs were also copied, and t are many reproductions out t I'm afraid that I cannot validate the authenticity of these two, as my knowledge of them is a bit limited. They do seem to be too good of quality to be reproductions, and I did read that copies often have gaping holes on the bottom(hollow-cast) and the paint jobs are not as intricate. Also the details on the back show molding and details, which are usually lacking in fakes. They each have firing holes on the back of their heads, which was essential to prevent explosion during firing. The stamps on them would be illegible, would it not be for a very similar pair that you can find on the completed listings on Ebay(you can just do an advanced search and find the photos like that, under Staffordshire dogs). The stamps seem to be identical, and those stamps state "Staffordshire Ware, England". If you look closely, you can make out part of the word "Staffordshire" and also the word "England". They each bear the number 33 on the bottom, I am not completely sure what the significance is. I do know that sets were often numbered, but usually only one through six, so if anybody has any knowledge of this, I would love to know. The figurines stand approximately 7 1/2 inches tall, and do display minor crazing on the lower halves. I did read that these molds are more desirable, since they have two separate front legs, which is trickier to manufacture than if the porcelain was in one lump piece. I believe I covered everything, but feel free to contact me with any further questions or comments. Thank you for your time!
