Antique Set/6 OLD Sarreguemines Alsace-Country French-PLATES Please DescriptionDetails Welcome! This auction is for a Set of 6 , antique, French Country transferware plates by Utzschneider & Cie, Sarreguemines .The pattern seems to be called "Alsace" and each plate shows a scene of different local, native French costumes and occupation of various towns in the Alsace region of France. All the plates are the same size, and measure 8" across. All have crazing, but no chips, no cracks, no hairlines. The colorful backstamp or mark on the back of these plates is wonderful in itself - an elaborate intertwining branch forms the "U Cie". I could not find this exact mark in my book, but this pottery existed from the 1700s to 1919, so these plates are OLD. I would guess 1880s/1890s. Also impressed marks of a "4" and "WB". They are:Captioned: "Kochersberg (Catholique) Environs de Strasbourg. 1." - showing a farm woman with a rake, who stands in front of a man and boy on a hay wagon, with other farmers in the far background. This plate is has brown staining of age, more than the others. Captioned: "Kochersberg (Protestante) Cote de Hochfelden et Saverne. 3." - showing an elaborately dressed woman in front of a church with others in the background, Captioned: "Aschbach Pres Soultz Sous Foret. 7" - showing a woman at a spinning wheel, spinning raw wool into yarn. Captioned: "Pecheur de Lill Servante (Strasbourg) 8." - showning a fisherman at a market stall offering his freshly caught fish to a farm woman with a shopping basket on her arm. Captioned: "Conducteur de Voitures de Charbon Cote de Soulz Sous Foret. 9." - showing a "coal car driver" is this a railroad conductor? - buying himself a cold drink from a street seller woman who has a a pitcher and a tray with cup. He holds a long stick with a line, which sort of looks like a fishing pole. Captioned: "Environs De Barr Gertwiller. 12." - showing a man with a grape harvesting basket on his back, passing by a woman who has a picnic basket near her feet. We can see the basket holds a bottle of wine. In the background can be seen the distinctive sight of the grape vines on wooden stakes and another woman with a harvest basket on her head. All the plates have a wonderful, twiggy-maze-like design on the surrounds - meant to represent the grape vines and leaves of the Alsace. This surround is done in the style of the Victorian Aesthetic Movement, and reminds me of the designs of one of my favorite designers of that era, Dr. Christopher Dresser. This design style helps to date these plates stylistically to the late Victorian to turn of the century era. At the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions on the surround of each plate are the banners of the various towns of the Alsace region, Colors - plate background is creamy off-white. With golden yellow, yellows, greens, blues, black, pale red to pinks, orange, and lavender.Guaranteed old and as described! See my other auctions for more neat stuff you may like!
