EXQUISITE ANTIQUE SEVRES PORTRAIT PLATE

CHATEAU de TUILERIES MARK, 1870

AND LATER SEVRES PORTRAIT CUP AND SAUCER SET

I am pleased to offer a fabulous trio of fine Sevres French porcelains for you this week. The grouping includes a 9" handpainted portrait plate with a garden scene and a man and woman in conversation. The plate is vivid blue with gilding and handpainted floral ovals on the rim. It's absolutely gorgeous. This plate is marked with the Sevres Chateau de Tuileries mark and is specifically date marked for 1870 (S70). There are no chips, cracks or other issues with this fine piece of porcelain.

Accompanying the plate is a cup and saucer set in the same colors with a blue ground and handpainted ovals filled with delicate flowers, all trimmed in gilt. The cup has a portrait almost invisibly titled in gold on gold, Fontange. This may be a portrait of Duchesse de Frontage, favored mistress of French King Louis XIV. She has very curly hair and I know the term, frontage, came to denote a particular hairstyle using ribbons, but since this woman is without headdress or ribbons, I cannot be certain. The cup is 2-1/2" tall. The accompanying saucer is 5-1/4" in diameter. Both these pieces have the simpler Sevres mark with the letter A centered and they appear newer than the plate. There are no chips, cracks or damage to either piece in this set.
