This a 19th Century Octant Sextant by Spencer Barrett & Co. London. This piece has an ebony frame and brass instruments. I believe this piece is from 1840-1850. We have had it in our family for over 30 years. The ivory plate cross bar is engraved Spencer. Barrett. & Co. London. These pieces have been seen in the Smithsonian. An example of the piece can be seen at this website /collections/navigation/object.cfm?recordnumber=1197564 . Approx. Length from top to bottom is 12.25" from bottom across is approx 10.5". T are 3 square sun shades and one does have a crack in it. The instrument has a 12" brass arm that moves across the instrument. It is excellent condition for it's age. T are a couple of hairline cracks across the back but nothing major. Please feel free to email me with any questions. I believe this piece to be very rare. I will be happy to send any more pictures of the instrument per your request.. I will ship anyw in U.S. for $25.00 including insurance. If you are interested outside of the U.S. Please contact me and we will figure shipping cost. Thank you.
