SGD. JAPANESE CARVED IVORY 7 MONKEYS HANDLE

Offered in this sale is a wonderful signed example of Japanese elephant ivory carving done for the western market in the late 19th century. Intended for use as a cane or parasol handle, this fantastical carving of seven monkeys wrestling over fruit exemplifies the western fascination with things Japanese.

The quality of the carving and composition is exceptional, with meticulous detail in the facial expression of each monkey, finely carved fur, and monkeys intertwined in all sorts of different positions. From the looks of it, I doubt this handle was ever used. The smooth tapered end shows no signs of ever being fitted to anything. It would make an exceptional handle for a magnifying glass, or quite beautiful simply mounted on a base as a piece of sculpture.

Marks: An integral carved raised panel engraved with Japanese characters is located between the bottom two monkeys.

Dimensions: 9 inches long

Condition: Excellent, with extremely nice patina, and virtually no signs of wear or use. A very fine age line is just barely visible in the smooth tapered section.
