Shawnee Pottery Co.was founded ( in 1937) to create, to manufacture and to distribute Earthenware products. They, according to their letter of September, 1937, invited folks to visit the plant and office on the 15th of that month. This SHAWNEE SOUP/CEREAL BOWL is the CORN PATTERN manufactured by Shawnee. The BOWL is # 92. This Shawnee Kitchenware was used as a display item in a china cabinet; tfore, in excellent condition. As a point of information: Shawnee acquired the Zanesville, Ohio plant of American Encaustic Tiling Co., Inc. The name and trademark were selected because the Shawnee tribe of American Indian once made the land adjoining the west bank of the Muskingum River their home and hunting ground. The site of the factory was believed to have been a Shawnee Village. The distinctive mark is said to have come from arrowheads found on the grounds. Probably best known Shawnee Kitchenware maybe the "Corn King" and "Corn Queen" lines which began as Proctor and Gamble premium give-aways. Based on the preponderance "King Corn" (darker yellow) was produced beginning in 1946. In 1954, the kernel changed again to a lighter yellow with darker green shucks. Shawnee Pottery,employed many of the noted potters of that time and that area, and ceased to be in l961.
