From My Personal Collection at NO RESERVE is this FIRST YEAR , circa 1952 – Sheaffer - LIFETIME - Snorkel fountain pen and mechanical pencil set, Near MINT in the original box!! Excellent 1st Year – solid 14K gold nib with original SOLID GOLD snorkel tube and Fine tip! An outstanding set from my personal collection! This pen measures 5 1/2" (137mm). Nice classic BURGUNDY & GOLD model and an outstanding writing set, investment quality! NO surface imperfections/use marks can be found even on very close inspection, surface area is smooth, very glossy! No chips, cracks, bite marks, monograms or personalization!! Excellent nib is Firm, Fine tip, with tines aligned and good tipping material. Pencil is also in excellent condition, with lead and good eraser. Pen's fill system has been recently restored and this pen is in excellent working condition! Snorkel fill system has a NEW ink sac, point gasket and barrel seal, and has been flushed and tested for leaks. Feed system has been cleaned and serviced. Moving parts have fresh silicone grease for smooth operation! It will arrive ready for your favorite ink!! The snorkel was known as the most efficient writing pen ever designed, writing more words with the same amount of ink than any other pen of its day! A nicer set would be hard to find! PLEASE NOTE: The "first year" snorkel can be distinguished by several features. One being the gold snorkel tube, another a shorter nib collar and a third is the internal snorkel filler’s spring collar (see photo). Some may argue that there is no basis for this statement, as there are no records on these unusual features, and the debate goes on. Fact: these three features are rare and are always found together. These nibs are not interchangeable with later snorkel nibs (extended taper reduces diameter). Speculation from the field: The snorkel was an instant classic, and is known as the most efficient pen ever designed, writing more words with the same amount of ink than any other fountain pen. With the instant success, IF Sheaffer had ADDED a solid gold snorkel tube after the pen was on the market, would not they have advertised a Special Model with a solid gold snorkel tube. Instead, the small cost in a gold snorkel tube added up quickly with the immediate success of this pen. When the solid gold tube was quickly and quietly replaced with steel, there was no advertising for “downgrading” the already successful pen. Additional note, most Snorkel Demonstrator pens have the "first year" features. An excellent example of a highly collectible pen! See photos for more details.
