SHEAFFER TRIUMPH 1946, FAT OVERSIZE MODEL--CARMINE RED! BINDER-RESTORED VACUUM, COOL STRIPED SECTION! I am a Trading Assistant - I can sell items for you!Sheaffer Lifetime Triumph pen circa 1946, in Carmine Red plastic with gold filled trim. This is the largest size made, a very substantial pen with lots of beautiful red color. The model is the 1250, and it sold for $12.50 back when it was new. It is larger than some of the more expensive models. The 5000, for example, had a solid gold cap and cost lots more, but was in a smaller size. This pen has two features that sets it apart from other 1250 models. First, it has the wide gold filled band which lends some added luxury. Many of these pens had the narrower band. Second, the section is striped. Later pens had black (visulated) sections, and the striped plastic ended at the metal threads. This pen, though, has stripes all the way up to the base of the nib, which is nice, especially in the Carmine Red color. With the striped-section model, the entire length of the barrel has vertical transparent windows, allowing for easy viewing of the ink level. The pen is a vacuum or piston filler. These piston filling pens are a delight to use. They represented a very creative way of solving the problem of how to make a pen fill on the downstroke , i.e., in the opposite direction of a syringe, which fills on the up stroke. Sheaffer engineers developed a barrel whose interior widened at the front, so as you push the piston forward, a vacuum builds up behind the gasket, which, when the gasket passes the widened point, sucks ink into the pen. It's fun to watch---the ink just climbs up the barrel, seemingly on its own, with (usually) no additional pumping required. The system requires watertight seals around the gasket as well as at the back of the barrel, and for years collectors avoided this pen, since they did not know how to properly renew these seals. Nowadays, though, t are several competent repair persons who restore them, so we can begin to enjoy them again. This pen's filling system has been professionally restored by Richard Binder, and is working well with lots of suction. The pen is in very good condition, with nice glossy plastic and legible imprint. The gold filled trim shows some wear along the bottom edge of the cap band. The two-tone Triumph nib is a fine to medium point. Overall length is about 5 1/8 inches. PAYMENT Paypal preferred; money orders and checks are also accepted.
