For sale is an exceptional art pottery plate produced by the Shearwater Pottery of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Made in the 1940's or 1950's it was made by Peter Anderson( founder of the pottery) and decorated by his brother Walter I. Anderson, an important southern American artist. The design of the stylized bird, was perhaps influenced by his admiration of primitive art. The design appears to have been incised and then glazed in colors of green, blue, and brown on an offwhite background. It is 10" across and 7/8" high. The pottery, a family operation that was started in 1928, was a product of the Arts & Crafts movement and produced some very fine ceramics. The condition, unfortunately, is not perfect as is has a number of chips on the foot (the largest being 3/4" by 3/8") T is also one small (1/16") chip on the plate edge. I have also shown a photo of a white area on the edge, that is not damage, but a glaze anomaly. On the bottom is their circular impressed mark. The beginning SHE is t, but very faint and hard to photograph. No reserve.
