A fine Old Sheffield (fused) Plate (6 cup) egg cruet c1835 James Dixon & Sons On offer is a fine large Old Sheffield Plate (not electroplate) egg cruet dating from about 1835 – 1840 featuring “C” scroll decoration with matting. The underside of the base carries the makers mark for James Dixon and Sons which was registered for 1835 (see “History of Old Sheffield Plate” by Frederick Bradbury pp 451). It is worth noting that the majority of Old Sheffield pieces you will come across are unmarked. This item has not been replated and is really in very good condition with light age related wear. The base has no bleeding through of copper but does have some light pitting and light abrasion where the egg cups have rested on their location points. The carrying handle detaches and is kept in place by its original nut. The crescent shaped spaces allow the spoon bowls (NOT INCLUDED) to rest securely, supported by the small fork shaped uprights. A set of “shield” bowl silver eggs spoons by Charles Boyton London 1865, which fit very well, are included in a separate listing. One is shown in place on one of the photographs as an illustration only. The egg cups themselves have some light bleeding around their feet, difficult to photograph, but one egg cup does have more bleeding around the bottom of the outside of the bowl where it meets the stem (illustrated) with signs of silver solder. Two of the egg cups have been regilded at some point and the inside of four of the cups have some scratches but this really does not hold them back – really quite light wear for 170 years of use. All this said, the detail on this item is superb especially on the fringe of the base, the feet and the carrying handle. The quality of the item is what might be expected from one of the most famous silversmithing dynasties in Sheffield. It displays beautifully and of course can be used to impress those weekend house guests! The egg cruet base measures 23.5cms long and 20cms across and the height to the top of the carrying handle from the feet is 22 cms . UK bidders only – I will only post to a UK destination. This item will be packed and posted in the UK by Royal Mail First class at a cost of £10.00 (it is heavy). Payment preferably by personal cheque please.
