Cameos are such happy, romantic pieces of jewelry, usually given to mark special occasions, and almost always as an expression of love! Don't forget, Christmas is just around the corner, and a beautiful cameo would make the ideal gift for that special someone in your life! Now is a subject you're not going to see too often! This is an absolutely beautiful shell cameo of a rarely seen Mercury(also known as Hermes). The cameo is of superb quality, and is definitely for those who prefer something a little out of the ordinary! Italian in origin, it was recently purchased from a shop in Torre del Greco, Italy - cameo capital of the world. It has been hand carved in exquisite detail by a skilled Artisan!Mercury was the son of Zeus, the result of an illicit union with Maia, goddess of the clouds (as well as one of the Pleiades). Mercury was the god who presided over commerce, wrestling, and other gymnastic exercises, even over thieving, and everything, in short, which required skill and dexterity. He was also known as the messenger of Zeus. He is generally depicted dressed in the clothes of a shepherd. He typically wore a winged cap and winged shoes, a testament to his great speed. He bore in his hand a rod entwined with two serpents, called the caduceus. Mercury is said to have invented the lyre. He found, one day, a tortoise, from which he took the shell, made holes in the opposite edges of it, and drew cords of linen through them, and the instrument was complete. T were nine cords, in honor of the nine Muses. Mercury gave the lyre to Apollo, and received from him in exchange the caduceus." Mercury's many adventures and his assignments to guide and safeguard various mortals made him the patron god of travelers. But his tricks also made him patron of thieves. The detail on this piece is exquisite, from the god's thick, curling hair and handsome features to the tiny wings attached to his helmet. The skilled artist has carved the cameo in medium relief, giving the figure a rather 3-D quality! This truly is a small work of art! This is a large cameo pendant with an attached bail, measuring 2.0" x 1.25". The cameo is in very good condition, with no cracks or chips. Under 10X magnification, I can see two faint hairlines in the background, but this is not visible without magnification, nor does it detract in any way from the beauty of this piece. The cameo has been set into a beautiful, art deco type frame of sparkling Sterling Silver, which has been sculpted in a lovely and airy "swirled" design. This frame was designed and created by the talented artist, Kim Miraglia (kmitch747). It was custom made for this particular cameo, so is definitely one of a kind! This outstanding, rare and stunning cameo would make the perfect gift, and is definitely a "must have" for any serious cameo collector! Don't miss out on this one -- bid early! I would prefer payment through PayPal, Money Order or Cashier's check. As a very last resort, I will accept personal checks, but they will be held 10 days, or until they clear. All payments must be received within 10 days of auction close. T will be a flat $6.00 shipping fee within the United States and Canada, which includes first class mail as well as insurance. International shipping will be actual cost. I ship once a week, generally on Saturday. Please direct all questions to me through ebay mail. PLEASE NOTE: We are dealing with mostly vintage and/or antique jewelry. This jewelry is not usually in "new", or perfect convdition. T is generally some wear due to its age, which is to be expected.
