UP FOR BID IS A VERY RARE BEAUTIFUL TENNESSEE CENTRAL RAILROAD NASHVILLE pattern individual creamer used in their snack tray service. A rare piece in this pattern that has rarely surfaced as this is the hardest of the two style creamers to find. These were used with the snack tray service on the TCRY in the late forties. T were two sizes of creamers that went with the coffeee cup and saucer snack -tray service that were served mostly in chair car service. Piece is near mint condition with no chips, cracks or blemishes.The flowers were always individually hand painted on this china. T is no hallmark on back as these were rarely marked on the back but most all of pieces said HAND PAINTED. The TC used this special HAND PAINTED pattern from 1945 to about 1953. The china was supplied to the railroad by a local china distributor in Tennessee and The Southern Railroad was, as I was told in charge of their dining operations up to a certain point. TC definately had purchased the china from the Shenango China Company for on line dining service but did not offer full range dining car service. The TC Did NOT have Dining Car Service per say but they indeed had buffet car service of which is w this china was used and retrieved. I have been told of examples lifted from service aboard a TC Buffet Car and it has always been this pattern all hand painted. Their buffet cafe service was started in the very early forties and ended in the mid fifties. The china used on buffet cars 1-2 supplied alledgedly by SOUTHERN RAILROAD COMMISSARY and purchased through Shenango China Company. Ordered by TC in the fortie The pattern was never RR B.S. It is not known why they purchased this pattern but it was a pretty choice for their very small cafe car setting which served only sack lunches in the later fifties. Meals would have been served on Buffet Coaches on trains numbers I and 2 between Nashville and Harriman. After WW2 these buffet cars were extremly busy and at least one gentleman saved a beautiful cup & saucer set from their buffet coach number 2. Seee D.O.R.for description of pattern). The TC RY Co. extended from Harriman, Tennessee, on the east to Hopkinsville, Kentucky on the west, about a distance of 248 miles or so and it connected Knoxville in the esat with Nashville in the west. Pullman sleeping cars operated over this line basically on night trains with dining car buffet service. The TC did not really operate diners, but the service was very good on their buffet cars with little or no complaints. Tenessee Central was eventually split up and solt to Southern who had an interest in the company from the beginning. The remainder of the TC went to Illinois Central and Louisville & Nashville. The sugar packet holder is in excellent condition showing moderate dining car usage. T are no chips, cracks or discoloration This piece is a tough find today in the pattern. This early circa 1947 piece has the design on both sides. This pattern was made for The TC only by SHENANGO CHINA Co. The china was hand painted and did not show a distributor's mark other than the Shenango China mark. This piece looks better than the digital images show Creamer is display ready and the hand painted flowers look wonderful. This is not a souvenier china piece but rather actual china used on a TC diner and is the heavy weight style of restaurant ware.
