SHOGUN (2V) + Tai-Pan by James Clavell Japan International Collectors Library

Shogun ( In Two Volumes)

plus Tai-Pan

by James Clavell International Collectors Library from 1975-6 Leather-Like Binding

James Clavell is a well-known novelist whose works covered the Orient, both present and past, and Shogun is most likely his most famous. (Others include Tai-Pan , Noble House , Whirlwind , and a bunch I've left out!) According to Wikipedia, he also wrote the book that was the basis of the movie, “To Sir, With Love” – a very different kind of story!

In Shogun , an English explorer in 17th century Japan, John Blackthorne encounters a powerful and power-hungry warlord and -- surprisingly -- a Catholic convert (like nearly all the English of his time, Blackthorne distrusted the Catholic Church), Lady Mariko, who is caught between two ways of life and love: that of her Japanese culture and that of her Catholic faith.

Shogun was turned into a TV (not-so-) mini-series with Richard Chamberlain and a long list of international stars, but this is the original book in a beautiful International Collectors' Library edition.
