Verdite is often called the “green stone” or “jade” of Africa. It is found only in the Southern region of the continent, particularly Zimbabwe. The stone’s brilliance and color occur in a variety of changing patterns and shades ranging from smooth golden browns to rich iridescent emerald greens and deep blues. It is also known as one of the most challenging mediums for sculptors. Highly regarded for its spiritual and healing qualities, ancient tribes began to craft this semi-precious stone into beautiful, intricate sculptures and jewelry of high stature. The stone is now becoming quite scarce, as it is being sought after by international art collectors and investors worldwide. Today, there is only one known major Verdite deposit in Zimbabwe, with no other deposits of comparable quality in any other region of the world. Created exclusively as a form of traditional artistic expression, modern Shona sculpture has transformed the Verdite art medium into one of the most highly respected and collectible forms of African art. This beautiful, one of a kind elephant sculpture stands over 6 inches tall, 4 inches wide and about 8 inches deep. The sculpture weights just under 5lbs. Laden with deep brilliant color and amazing expression, she is an outstanding addition for not only the African wildlife enthusiast, but art collector as well. read more
