Siamese Naval Dirk & Scabbard - Early 20th C.
This is a good Naval Dirk from Siam (known as Thailand since 1939). The overall length - in scabbard - is 18 1/4 inches. The blade is 11 1/16 inches long and the hilt is 4 9/16 inches long. The blade doesn't have any markings that I can find and is single-edged with a wide back. T are nicks on the edges - both top and bottom - but mostly along the bottom edge. The hilt has an elephant head pommel and brass backstrap. The guard and catch button are also brass but the catch looks to be steel. The grip looks to be ray or sharkskin bound with wire. One side of the grip looks like it may have been reinforced along the backstrap edge (please see photos). The scabbard is a white, non-ferrous metal with brass fittings at either end and 2 brass rings near the throat (some of the brass almost looks like copper in the right light). Basically the scabbard is in very good condition though it does have a couple of small, minor dents and a couple of small areas of rubbing/scratching.
