Sidney Callowhill was a prominent artist, well known for his works during the Arts & Crafts period. These six multifacted cups are a wonderful robin's egg blue, with an iridescent quality. They have silver painted trim to the lips, and the handles. His pottery and porcelain works come up very infrequently in the better auctions. They are in overall very good condition. He lived in Brooklyn, NY; Baltimore, MD, and finally Boston, MA, w he died in 1939. By profession he was an Illustrator, painter, designer, and porcelain and glass decorator. His work was exhibited in Soc. of Arts & Crafts, Boston, 1897, 1907, 1917, 1920-22, 1924-27; Lg. Mineral Painters, NYC, 1898; New York Soc. Arts & Crafts, 1925 (solo); National All. Art & Industry, traveling exhibition, 1932; JMW Gallery, 1997 (Objects from the Soc. of Arts & Crafts). He was a member of the Soc. Arts & Crafts, Boston, 1907-27. He was an Illustrator (original watercolors for some lithographed plates), Ferdinand Schuyler Mathews, Golden Flower Chrysanthemum (Boston: Louis Prang & Co., 1890).
