his exceptional Chimney Sweep quilt is in rough shape with considerable staining and numerous fabrics in weak condition, but it is exquisitely quilted and a dated signature or friendship quilt apparently dating to July-Sept 1854, so its historical appeal remains quite strong. A number of the blocks are both dated and inked with a place which looks like Greenville. There is one block with an early eagle stamp. And then many of the names are stitched in a dotted line. This doesn't make them particularly easy to read, but it's an interesting approach and probably much less common in that era than inking. SizeThe quilt measures a generous 84" x 102" . The blocks range around 12 inches square. The center white bricks with the signatures range around 2 inches by 7 inches long. Quilting The hand-quilting is outstanding, with 7-11 tiny little stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. In the open blocks, the lush leafy wreaths with a triple-line freehand infill around their edges are particularly lovely and densely detailed. The Chimney Sweep blocks are crisply overall quilted in diagonal lines spaced about 1/2 inch apart. Construction The quilt is entirely handmade, with the hand-piecing tight and strong. Binding, Batting & Backing The narrow applied straight-grain binding is entirely hand-applied and ranges around 1/4-inch wide or a little over. It's in surprisingly strong shape with just some dye issues and small popped holes at the edges all the way around. It only has actual splits and fraying in a couple places. The batting is very thin and even. The backing is a very sturdy weave of white cotton (or possibly linen/a blend of the two?) like that used in the open blocks on the front. Condition The quilt's condition is strong and supple, unwashed since I found it and clearly plagued with considerable issues of fabric damage and staining, as outlined in the photos. There are 30 blocks. I would judge the fabrics of 16 to be in good strong shape. Some of these have dye issues and staining, but none have fabric decay or wear. Another 11 have heavy fabric damage almost all clearly due to the stress of washing prints with problematic dyes and mordants. That leaves three and these last few have wear, but it's just more contained little pops to their printed repeats. Image 2 of 35 35 images with captions tell this quilt's story.
