Auction D escription Now, this pair of bookends is extremely modernistic in style, a true departure from the classical tradition! The birds are both devoid of heavy ornamentation and are definitely from the streamlined Moderne and Machine Age movements that emphasized curved forms and long horizontal lines. You will find this pair to be strongly geometric with long, stark, rectangular facades and minimalist lines. It was this design style that permeated almost every facet of life from architecture to appliances early in the 20 th century. These Cubist Birds are from 1925 and were made by the renowned Andersen Starr foundry. They are truly remarkable pieces, which is not surprising since one of the company's founders, philanthropist and humanitarian Theodore Starr, was a master metal and silversmith who produced and designed objects as early as the 1880's for various top companies. This NY-based company existed for only a short time, and their pieces were always extremely limited, with many having yet to be identified and properly archived. Both pieces display quite well from any configuration, possessing lines that are perfectly straight, balanced, and symmetrical. The birds have been reduced to simple lines and curves and possess a caricaturesque quality. You will find both bookends to be in good condition with no breaks, flaws, read more
