This ball has been autographed by EVERY* member of the 2007-2008 Boston Celtics basketball team (*NOTE: ball does NOT include autographs of P.J. Brown or Sam Cassell, as the ball was signed prior to their joining the roster) - including the new "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. The ball has a total of twelve (12) signatures (players only - Head Coach Doc Rivers is NOT included). The signatures include: Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins, Leone Powe, Tony Allen, James Posey, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Eddie House, Brian Scalabrine, and Scott Pollard. The Celtics are one of the elite teams in the NBA, and will contend for their 17th championship banner this season. This auction will benefit the Low Grade Astrocytoma Research Program of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. Pediatric Low Grade Astrocytomas (PLGAs) are unequivocally the most common form of childhood brain tumors. The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States estimates that t are over 20,000 children with PLGAs today and over 1000 new children diagnosed with some type of PLGAs each year. Primary cancers of the brain are the most common solid tumor of childhood and the leading cause of pediatric cancer death. Made up of over 280 different histologic entities, low-grade gliomas form the largest group of brain tumors in this population. They occur in all locations of the brain and tend to predominate in younger children. Unlike most other tumors of the central nervous system, pediatric low-grade gliomas have a better prognosis than most tumors, and unlike adult low-grade gliomas, will often arrest their own growth. Because of the heterogeneous location of these tumors, coupled with the young age of many patients and the overall positive prognosis, research efforts have tended to focus on the much more malignant high-grade gliomas w the overall prognosis remains very poor. But, thanks to a small group of parents who have children afflicted by either a JPA or a fibrillary astrocytoma, and to the efforts of the Pediatric Low Grade Astrocytoma Foundation, a new program has been created at Dana-Farber to focus on low-grade tumors and to discover new and improved targeted therapies that don't risk impairing children's bodies and minds. The LGA Program -- under the direction of Charles Stiles, PhD, and Mark Kieran, MD, PhD -- will draw resources, including personnel and technology, from Dana-Farber's pediatric neuro-oncology program, the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School, Children's Hospital Boston, and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. To learn more about how you might make a donation to contribute to the mission of the LGA Program, please contact Karen Sveda at or .As I stated, this ball is being auctioned off to benefit the LGA Program. My Boston area mens league amateur baseball team is fundraising to benefit this worthy cause, and the Boston Celtics (through their Shamrock Foundation program) have graciously provided this basketball to us in order to help raise money. The basketball is a rubber basketball containing both the traditional Celtics logo, and the Red Auerbach memorial logo. Unfortunately, t is no certificate of authenticity included (one was not provided by the Celtics organization). However, I am including the original letter to me by the Celtics organization which accompanied the basketball, referencing the basketball, our team's fundraiser, and the valued price of the ball being at $500.00. This letter is being provided to authenticate the ball. I also have removed the shipping label from the box that the ball was shipped in, and will include it with the ball. Again, it lists the name of the Celtics executive for the Shamrock Foundation (the same person listed on the letter), and can be used for authentication purposes. If the winning bidder would like, I would also be willing to provide a notarized affidavit explaining the au...
