British Tall Case Grandfather, Signed, Maddocks Frodsham, c. 1840s. This Massive case is pushing 8 feet tall and over 2 feet wide with gorgeous, rich wood inlays of burl and light oak with Mahogany background. The flat top design is highlighted with scrolls capped with the original brass turrets and three brass finials and flaned by very unusual fluted colums. Case stands on a stout lower base that may have been re-inforced years ago with the bottom trim piece. All wood does have the same patina so it certainly may be original as well - hard to say for certain. Massive Brass 8-day, two-weight driven movement chimes loudly and clearly on the hour on a heavy bell. Second hand operates with the beat of the pendulum, while the calendar/date hand is functional. Case does show some wear near the bottom, and some decay along the bottom back side has been stabilized and re-inforced so as to assure decades of additional life. As with most clocks of this age, some Minor veneer loss is present in very small pieces and a crack is in the lower panel - another common feature due to the age shrinkage of these thin panels. The dial is wonderful: an Original Painted dial, signed with maker's name, with two painted long tailed and pretty birds. Very minor paint loss and very fine condition.
