SIGNED C1880 TONALIST LANDSCAPE PAINTING SPRING MEADOW BY GEORGE INNESS NoReserv Description This listing is for a signed, circa 1880, American Tonalist landscape painting by George Inness. The painting is oil on artist board and unframed. It measures 21 by 28 ¾ inches or 53.5 by 73 cm. The painting features a serene landscape with a lush meadow lined with trees. In the background a brooding sky is dominating with rain falling over the trees in the distance. Above these dark rain clouds is a lighter sky with light pink highlights, and hope of a beautiful sunset. The painting is signed on the lower left “G. INNESS”, this is for George Inness 1825-1894. Inness was an influential American landscape painter. His work was influenced, in turn, by that of the old masters, the Hudson River school, and the Barbizon school. Often called "the father of American landscape painting," Inness is best known for these mature works that not only exemplified the Tonalist movement but also displayed an original and uniquely American style. The painting is in good condition. There is some minor wear to the paint around the edges where artist board is worn. Usually I guarantee the art I sell but in this case I cannot as I have no real provenance on this painting, so please be aware of this as you bid. There is no reserve.
