I am offering a stunning pair of original vintage vases from the Cumbow China Company of Abingdon, Virginia. Both vases are signed "Cumbow" with the numbers 31 and 41. The vases have a classical urn shape on a square base with graceful, decorative handles. They are decorated in Cumbow's "Orleans" design (named for New Orleans) with wide horizontal stripes of Maroon color alternating with thin white and copper stripes. The handles and base have heavily-applied copper luster. The vases measure 7-1/8 inches high, the mouth is 4-inches in diameter, and the base is 3-inches square. They are both in excellent condition, without chips or cracks. The copper lustre on the handles and base has aged to a lovely patina, and t is some crazing, which is only noticeable on close examination. The vases appear as fresh and magnificent as the day they were made. The colors and pattern of the vases are shown in Richard Foil's book, "Cumbow China of Abingdon, Virginia," on pp. 30 and 47. Mr. Foil's book was made available at the William King Regional Arts Center of Abingdon, Virginia, during an exhibit entitled, "Painted Lustre: The Cumbow China Decorating Company," which took place from May 26 to October 8, 2006. The exhibit of Cumbow china was developed by the King Art Center's Cultural Heritage Project to document and present the artistic legacy of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee and to foster appreciation of the region's role in American decorative and folk art made by hand in the region in the early 1900's.
