Price Break : It seems that no matter what price I put on my ships in bottle, they all eventually sell. I believe the reason for that is that I have set prices which are fair in relation to the value of each individual sib. I don't sell sibs to make big bucks -- this is just a hobby for me. Whatever I make goes right back into the search for new inventory. But in the hope of moving some sibs that are collecting dust in the closet, I'm lowering the price on this one, as well as some others (check out my other listings). There are some viewers out there who have this on their watch list -- early bird gets the sib. I've reinspected this sib and it is even nicer than the photos suggest. Original vs. Factory Made: There are a lot of ships in bottles listed on eBay which are mass produced in a factory-like setting. In my opinion, those "sibs" will not increase significantly in value over time. Most of them are not worth the cost of shipping. This ship in bottle is made the traditional way, through the neck. It is an original piece of folk art, not made in a factory in China ... see my comments below concerning value. New (Antique) SIBS Are being Listed ... I have quite a few older sibs I hope to list this week. Check out my other listings. Signed & Dated ... I love ships in bottle with provenance, and that includes SIBs that are signed and dated inside the bottle. Yes, it takes a little of the mystery away, but sometimes its nice to be able to place something in historical context without playing Sherlock Holmes. I do believe this is the first SIB I've let go that is signed and dated. It isn't old, but it is indeed a very nice contemporary piece. According to the wooden plank at the bottom of the sea resin (inside the bottle), this SIB was made by B. Murray on June 30, 1997. I have no clue who Mr. Murray is, but I know I purchased this in England, so I'm guessing there is a link to the UK.What's For Sale? This is a lovely ship in a pinch bottle. Mr. Murray was a very skilled craftsperson as he made a beautiful SIB. There isn't one thing wrong with this ship in bottle. Nothing -- it's perfect. Masts are all aligned and there are no loose shards inside the bottle. The rigging is quite realistic, and Murray used beads to simulate pulleys -- always a nice touch. The hull is painted red, black and white -- picture perfect. The hull is similarly well done and realistic with a small red dinghy on top of a cabin and other holds on deck. For an aft, the hull is higher, again adding to the realism. The sea resin is a nice Pacific blue color with whitecaps. The neck is capped with the original screw-cap. If you don't have a classic pinch bottle SIB in your collection, you wouldn't go wrong with this one. In a word, this ship in bottle is -- "Perfect!" Virtual Museum of Folk Art in Bottles . My good friend Greg Alvey down in Owensboro, KY is an avid collector of ships in bottles and has undertaken the huge responsibility of educating the public about folk art in bottles. Listed on his website are over 800 examples of folk art bottles, including some from ships in bottles from my personal collection. Check out my other items -- I'll be posting other ships in bottle in the very near future. Interested in learning more about ships in bottle? Join the Ships in Bottle Association of America. Check out the website: / Learn more from the people who still make them. (FYI, I myself don't have the patience, but I can appreciate the results all the same.) A Word About Value ... I have no clue how many ships in bottles I've sold on eBay through the years, but suffice it to say -- quite a few. And as with all products and services dur...
