Signed `EB 1965` Eugene Berman oil on canvas titled on verso, `Aswan Landscape with two Obelisks`, verso also reads, `EB Jan. 1965 Rome.` Eugene Berman, (b.1899-d.1972) became a artist known for his imaginary landscapes and for his Baroque stage sets for ballets and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He was fascinated by solitary figures amidst ruins, and much of his work explored space and the passing of time. In his paintings, he showed fascination with architecture, a subject that he often explored with eerie landcapes. He toured Europe extensively, especially Italy, to learn more about architecture and developed a special interest in the Baroque architectural drawings of Giovanni Guercino. His work can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Fine Arts Museum of Boston and many others. From the collection of the estate of Mr. Robert Tobin of San Antonio. Site: 27.5`H x 39.5`W; Frame 28.5`H x 40.5`W. Circa - 1965.
