This letter, on Tuskegee letterhead, was written to Mr. George May Powell on May 4. 1899. Dear Sir: I have your letter of April 26th and have read smae with interest. I have also been glad to have the enclosures. I am sure that it will be possible for us to arrange for you tolecture at tuskegee during the next school year. I shall return from a vacation to Europe about the first of August, and if you will write me during that month or September I should be able to definitively arrange the matter. Yours truly, (signed) Booker T. Washington Principal The letter is matted with archival matboard in an oak frame. George May Powell was a philanthropist and public speaker on progressive and religious issues of the late 19th Century. Powell's public career started in his 20's as a noted statisician in the U.S. Treasury Department during the Civil War. After the war Powell became very involved in three publishing companies which combined his business and social reform interests. Powell also founded several social reform organizations. He was a noted public speaker, writer and cartographer. He also delved into photography as well as design and promotion of his inventions of an improved rifle and army cot.
