THE DETAILS : This is an Association copy because the author has included a note to the "Fred" mentioned above. The note is dated 20 June 2000, and reads as follows: "Dear Fred: Herewith a copy of or "Skippers" which I hope you will enjoy. I think you may have been responsible for my being asked to do the book since I gather the editor first approached the museum and you suggested me. They wanted first-hand accounts and rather than cull them from autobiographies, I suggested we use Journal stories. They agreed. With a bit of additional editing (and in some cases, quite a bit) here is the result. The stories span the early charting flights of the 1920s to more recent firefighting and delivery flights, each when displaying a special ingenuity and courage characteristic of early bushfires. Skippers of the Sky blends history and adventure in a fitting tribute to Canada's early aviation heroes. William J. Wheeler has had a lifelong fascination with aviation, beginning with his boyhood in Port Arthur, Ontario, where he would cycle to a nearby seaplane base to watch the Norsemen and Beaver aircraft to land and take off. An art teacher and book and magazine illustrator, his previous publications include the book Images of Flight and numerous articles for the CAHS Journal and Air Force Magazine. He was one of the founders of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society and is a former president and is currently president of the Society and editor of its journal.
