Signed Square Lacquered Russian Box With Romantic Scene A delightful little black lacquered box from Russia whose body cross-section is a simple square but whose lid and base are squares modified with a pair of wide indentations on each of the four sides plus a narrow indentation on each corner. Russian lacquered boxes require great skill and often days or weeks of effort to make. Just try to imagine how you would paint something on this scale and with this level of detail. The box is lacquered in black on the outside and bright red inside. The picture on top shows a man and a woman, both elaborately costumed, apparently from some Russian folk tale unknown to me. This picture is on a raised round part on top of the modified square lid. Some Russian lacquered boxes portray people with detailed but expressionless faces. In this one, the faces are very expressive, especially the manâe(tm)s face. We acquired four Russian lacquer boxes at the same time. In the others, I was generally able to figure out much or all of what the Russian Cyrillic writing was saying. This one contains far more text than the other ones do, but it has me almost completely mystified. Maybe it identifies the legend illustrated in the painting.
